She may be living off the income she generates from Instagram, but Nur Afifah Binti Mohd Zubir is very much grounded to the here, now, and tangible.

The fashion, beauty, and lifestyle influencer from Kuala Lumpur says that while we can choose to live in the “elaborated moments in time” on Instagram, she believes in striking a balance and being true to one’s self.

“Only in the moment of now, we can fully sustain who we are in integrity. As long as you feel good and happy, that’s all that matters,” the 25-year-old reiterates.

Read on as Nur Afifah dishes out on the realities of working as an Instagrammer, her personal record-breaking make-up time, and her experience personalising her Photobook calendar!

Share with us what goes on in your day-to-day.

My average day consists of replying emails, taking photos and attending events. I also take time to research on marketing, how to maintain my audience and keep my content flowing and interesting. It’s not a 9-to-5 job so my working time is pretty unpredictable but I love every minute of it.

Why do you do what you do?

I love how my followers interact and share their stories with me. Usually, it’s about their purchases based on my recommendations, which changed their routine for the better. It is a really great and warm feeling to see how you can positively affect people.

Your make-up looks phenomenal. How long does it usually take to put your makeup on?

Since I have to test and try make-up on a daily basis, I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it compared to 4 years ago. Normally, when I am not in a rush, I take an hour maximum.

The longest time she spent on making up was 2 hours! The quickest was only 5 minutes.

We’re sure many are curious: what are the top 3 skincare products you cannot live without?

Klairs’ Supple Preparation Toner, The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid Toner, and Freeman’s Charcoal and Black Sugar Mask.

Clear and healthy skin, check! Any other tips for Insta-perfect photos?

Angle and lighting (natural or artificial) are super important. The camera is also crucial, but smartphone cameras these days produce pretty amazing picture quality, so just play around with what you have. One more thing, use a really good editing app and be creative!

Photobook is 13 this year! What were you like at 13 years old?

When I was 13, I was just starting high school. In Malaysia, we call it Form 1. I enjoyed DIY projects and crafts, and I still do. I used to customise my own notebooks by printing out pictures, cutting them out from magazines, and making a collage out of them. One of the reasons why I love Photobook is that I get to create and preserve my memories in something tangible – a photobook.

We see you have a new Photobook merch! Did you enjoy personalising your calendar?

Creating the calendar on the app was very simple and easy to understand. The possibilities are endless – you can even create your own specific theme! You get to pick the photos you want for a specific month, so I dedicated each month to a loved one based on their birthday.

Your calendar, your way: Personalise the pages with photos of you and a loved one whose birthday falls on that month!

Speaking of holidays, how would you describe your travelling style?

I love exploring new places; the nature and also the city. I usually travel once a year; for example, if this year I’m going to a country that offers picturesque natural retreats, next year I’d go to a country with a busy city life. This way, I get to experience both worlds. In terms of food, I am not really fussy and I am willing to try anything. However, in terms of accommodation, I would prefer hostels, Airbnb, or an average hotel is good enough. Since I’ll be spending most of my time outside, it’s all good as long as the hotel has a bed and bathroom.

Okay, last one. If you could live in any city in the world, where would it be and why?

I’ve always wanted to live in or at least travel to New York City. I’ve been fascinated by this city since I was a kid. The cultural differences, architecture, and countless museums – there is something for everyone of any age to enjoy.
